There are currently two highly ranked K-8 charter schools operating inside the bounds of River Islands: River Islands Technology Academy and the Next Generation STEAM Academy. As schools across California have been shut down due to the Governor’s Orders, River Islands was able to quickly implement virtual classrooms to ensure there was minimal gaps in learning for the community’s students. Both charter schools place a strong emphasis on technology-use with a one-to-one device to student ratio at River Islands Technology Academy, which provides Google Chromebooks for the older students and iPads for the younger students. With California’s statewide stay-at-home order in place, it only took River Islands Technology Academy four days before students were back to learning through their virtual classrooms, allowing students and teachers to interact directly with each other from the safety of their homes.
